Common Questions
Common Questions
Which Big Green Egg sizes does the griddle insert fit?
The Large (18" kit) and the XL (24" kit), both supplied with 3" risers. Arteflame doesn't currently make a kit for other Egg sizes. Measure your cooking grate before ordering.
How is this different from a solid griddle plate?
The kit has two pieces: a flat carbon-steel griddle ring and a center grill grate. You sear over the coals on the grate and cook on the griddle ring at the same time, over one charcoal fire. A solid griddle plate covers the whole grill, so nothing cooks directly over the fire.
What can I cook on it?
Use the center grate for steaks, chops and burgers over the coals, and the griddle ring for eggs, vegetables, smash burgers and pancakes. Follow Big Green Egg's guidance for dome position and airflow.
What is it made of?
Precision laser-cut U.S. hot-rolled steel, for both the griddle ring and the center grill grate. It is raw steel that seasons like cast iron.
Do I need to season it?
Yes. Before the first cook, apply a thin coat of high-smoke-point oil to both pieces and heat them gradually. After each cook, scrape while warm, wipe and apply a light coat of oil to build a natural, low-stick patina.
Is Arteflame affiliated with Big Green Egg?
No. This is a compatible accessory kit, and Arteflame is not affiliated with Big Green Egg. Big Green Egg® is a registered trademark of Big Green Egg, Inc.
