A dedicated flat-top griddle is usually a separate appliance — a propane-fired outdoor griddle station bought in addition to a charcoal grill. Arteflame's griddle inserts skip that: they turn the grill you already own (Weber Kettle, Big Green Egg or other kamado, or a recteq 20" charcoal grill) into a flat-top, using the same charcoal fire that's already lit for grilling.
The insert is a carbon-steel ring that sits where your stock grate normally goes, with a center grate still in place for direct searing. That means smash burgers, hash browns, pancakes, quesadillas, stir-fry, or anything else that wants a flat, evenly-heated surface can cook on the ring at the same time a steak sears on the grate in the middle — one fire, two cooking styles, no second grill or propane griddle station taking up patio space.
It's a genuine upgrade for breakfast and weeknight cooking specifically, since a bare charcoal grate isn't built for eggs, thin-cut proteins, or anything that would fall through the grate or stick without a flat surface underneath it. Carbon steel seasons the same way cast iron does — expect the surface to darken and build natural release over the first several uses, and a Crisbee Seasoning Puck (sold separately) speeds that along.
Fits are stocked for Weber Kettle grills, Big Green Egg and other kamado-style cookers, and recteq's 20" charcoal grill — each a tool-free swap for the stock grate, reversible any time you want the factory grate back. If you're deciding whether to add flat-top cooking to a grill you already own, this is the direct answer: no new grill required.
