Grilled Dulce de Leche on the Arteflame Grill

Grilled Dulce de Leche with Condensed Milk

Introduction

Dulce de Leche is a sweet, creamy caramel made from slowly simmering milk and sugar until it becomes thick and golden. This version uses the Arteflame grill for a unique outdoor cooking twist, giving the dulce de leche a subtle smoky undertone. Perfect for drizzling over desserts, spreading on toast, or eating by the spoonful!  Perfect as a delicious desert when you're done grilling your meal!

Ingredients

  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
  • Pinch of sea salt (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Fire Up the Arteflame Grill

Light the Arteflame grill using vegetable oil-soaked napkins and firewood. Let the grill heat for about 20 minutes until the flat cooktop reaches a low, even heat.

Step 2: Prepare the Condensed Milk

Open the can of sweetened condensed milk and pour it into a grill-safe pot or small cast iron skillet. Stir in vanilla extract and a pinch of salt, if desired, to enhance the flavor.

Step 3: Simmer on the Grill

Place the pot on the outer edge of the flat cooktop, where the heat is lower. Stir occasionally and let the condensed milk simmer gently, thickening and caramelizing slowly. Continue cooking for about 1-2 hours, stirring every 10-15 minutes, until the mixture turns a rich golden brown and reaches a thick, creamy consistency.

Step 4: Cool and Serve

Once the dulce de leche has thickened and darkened, remove it from the grill. Let it cool for a few minutes, then transfer to a jar or serving dish. You can serve it warm or refrigerate it for later use.

Tips

  • Low Heat: Keep the heat low to prevent the condensed milk from scorching. Stir regularly to ensure even caramelization.
  • Make-Ahead: You can store the dulce de leche in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
  • Extra Flavors: Add a pinch of cinnamon or a splash of rum for an extra layer of flavor.

Variations

  1. Chocolate Dulce de Leche: Stir in 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder or melted dark chocolate for a chocolatey twist.
  2. Coconut Dulce de Leche: Use coconut milk instead of condensed milk for a dairy-free version.
  3. Salted Caramel Dulce de Leche: Sprinkle flaky sea salt on top for a salted caramel flavor.
  4. Vanilla Bean Dulce de Leche: Add a split vanilla bean to the condensed milk for a deeper vanilla flavor.
  5. Spiced Dulce de Leche: Add a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or cloves for a spiced variation.

Best Pairings

  • Desserts: Drizzle over ice cream, pancakes, waffles, or cheesecake for a rich, sweet topping.
  • Fruit: Serve with fresh apples, bananas, or pears for a quick and easy dessert.
  • Drinks: Stir a spoonful into coffee, hot chocolate, or even a milkshake for added sweetness.

Conclusion

Grilled Dulce de Leche is a sweet and creamy treat that takes on a unique flavor when cooked on the Arteflame grill. Whether used as a dessert topping, a dip, or a spread, this rich caramel sauce is sure to be a favorite.
