The Best Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

There are few foods as pleasing to eat as Grilled Cheese Sandwiches right from the grill.  The smoke of the fire adds a whole new dimension, making these grilled cheese sandwiches absolutely irresistible...

INGREDIENTS

Sliced bread
Gruyere, Cheddar, Muenster or Gouda Cheese
Butter (or Mayonnaise)
Tomatoes
Ham, Bacon, Pastrami, Chicken or Turkey
optional: blue cheese!

PREPARATION

Fire up your Arteflame grill and get it ready to cook.  Coat the cooktop where you will be putting the bread lightly with butter.

Note: different cheeses melt in different ways.  Aged cheeses for instance (like aged Gouda) are very tasty but become hard when they cool.  The best cheeses to use in our experience are; Gruyere, Cheddar, Muenster or Gouda Cheese depending on taste.  For kids, stay with these.  For adults, try adding just a bit of blue cheese for a lot of extra flavor.  Not too much as the blue cheese has a tendency to get really liquid when melted.

Option 1.  You can grill the sandwiches "deconstructed" by grilling the bread, cheese and any other ingredients directly on the cooktop.  This is especially useful when also using bacon or other raw meets.  It allows you to make sure all the ingredients are cooked before combining them into the sandwich.  When the bread is toasted and the cheese is melted, combine all for a great melted cheese sandwich.

Option 2.  The more traditional way is to make the sandwiches and put them on the grill as is.  Grill them until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.

The flat cooktop of the Arteflame is ideal for making these!  Initially, put the cheese sandwiches on the flat cooktop closer to the center where the cooktop is hotter.  Once the bread has a nice crust, move them to the outside for the cheese to melt.

NOTE: In stead of using butter on the bread, try Mayonnaise.  This will give a deeper more complex flavor and toast the bread better than just using butter.

Also try adding tomato or jalapeño...
