Gourmet Hot Dogs with Caramelized Onions and Gruyere Recipe by Johan Magnussen @Big Swede BBQ
Experience gourmet hot dogs like never before with Johan Magnussen's @Big Swede BBQ recipe. Grilled on the Arteflame, these franks are topped with caramelized onions, Gruyere, and a special sour cream mix.
Ingredients:
- 4 hot dog buns
- 4 quarter-pound beef franks
- 3 yellow onions
- 2 Tbs fresh thyme leaves
- 1 bag beefy onion soup mix
- 1 cup sour cream
- 8 oz Gruyere cheese, shredded
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Oil, for grilling
Instructions:

Prepare the Onion Sour Cream Mix:
- In a small bowl, mix together the beefy onion soup mix and sour cream. Set aside.

Prepare and Cook the Onions:
- Cut the ends off the onions, slice in half, and remove the outer layer. Core the onions and slice them thinly lengthwise.
- Heat up the Arteflame plancha to medium heat. Oil the plancha and add the sliced onions.
- Grill for about 20 minutes, flipping frequently, until caramelized. Season with salt and pepper.

Grill the Beef Franks:
- Score a light criss-cross pattern on both sides of the beef franks.
- Place the franks on the plancha and grill, turning occasionally until cooked through.

Melt the Cheese on Onions:
- Once the onions are caramelized, divide them into four piles on the plancha.
- Season each pile with fresh thyme leaves.
- Sprinkle 2 oz of shredded Gruyere cheese over each onion pile.
- Cover with a dome or lid until the cheese is melted.

Assemble the Hot Dogs:
- Spread the onion/sour cream mixture inside each bun.
- Place a grilled beef frank in each bun.
- Carefully lift each onion and cheese pile from the plancha and place on top of the beef franks.

Serve:
- Serve the gourmet hot dogs immediately and enjoy the unique combination of flavors.
