Cheese Choices
The best cheeses for making a grilled cheese sandwich combine excellent meltability with bold or creamy flavors. Cheddar is a classic choice, offering a balance of sharpness and smoothness, especially when paired with a mild variety. For a nutty, sophisticated twist, Gruyère elevates the sandwich with its buttery texture and subtle depth. Fontina and Monterey Jack are also excellent options, melting effortlessly for a silky bite. For an ultra-creamy sandwich, consider Brie or Havarti, both of which add a luxurious richness. For those craving variety, mixing cheeses—like sharp cheddar and mozzarella—provides the perfect blend of flavor and stretch. Whatever your choice, these cheeses will make your grilled cheese a gooey, golden masterpiece.
Being from Holland, my personal favorite is Gouda (not aged). It melts beautifully and stays nice and soft when it cools.
